Peer Support!

Peer Counseling, funded by the Department of Assistive and Rehabilitation Services (DARS) and Department of Education's Services Administration (RSA), is one person who has a disability working with another in a supportive relationship.  Offers opportunities to interact with peers sharing information to learn with personal and social adjustment and relationships.

SAILS' staff includes a majority of persons with disabilities who engage in peer counseling.  The staff person who "has been there" can be tremendously supportive and helpful in empowering another person with a disability as he or she reaches for greater self determination and independence.

Peer counseling is also provided by SAILS through its volunteer peer support program, whereby trained persons with disabilities who are living independently are matched with other disabled persons in a one-on-one relationship of support and mentorship.

The intent and effect of the volunteer peer support program is to extend the staff counselors' usefulness and effectiveness.
